Having read Edition 2, you now know which numbers matter most — Sales, Service, Parts, Rental, and Whole Dealership Profit Margin — it is time to put someone in charge of each one.
Because here is the truth: if everybody is responsible, nobody is responsible.
Healthy dealers do not just measure their numbers; they assign ownership. When one person knows a number is theirs to watch, track, and improve, accountability turns into action.
Put a Person Behind Every Profit Margin
Start by connecting each Profit Margin (PM) to a name:
- Sales Profit Margin: your sales manager or lead salesperson.
- Service Profit Margin: your service manager or foreman.
- Parts Profit Margin: your parts counter lead or department head.
- Rental Profit Margin: whoever manages the schedule and fleet.
- Whole Dealership Profit Margin: you, the owner or general manager — tying it all together.
If you can measure it, you can improve it.
But when you assign responsibility, you can also reward it.
When someone sees their name next to a Profit Margin, that number starts to move. They watch it, talk about it, and take pride in improving it.
Make It Simple and Visible
Give each manager a short, clear dashboard.
You do not need fancy software — a simple spreadsheet or whiteboard works fine.
Meet regularly, review the same few Profit Margins, and make them part of the rhythm of your business.
The goal is not to drown in data — it is to create ownership.
Empower and Reward
Ownership without authority leads to frustration.
If someone is responsible for improving a Profit Margin, give them the tools and decision-making space to do it.
And when they succeed, reward it — publicly, financially, or both.
The more people you empower to think like owners, the healthier your dealership becomes.
We will dive into each Profit Margin in the coming posts — what drives it, what hurts it, and how to improve it step-by-step.
For now, start here: put a name next to every Profit Margin and make it someone’s mission to move it.
